Project Summary

After years of acquiring companies, a $22.5B Diversified Manufacturing Conglomerate was left supporting and maintaining each of the different legacy manufacturing and ERP systems.   In order to simplify and standardize back office processes, a multi-year project was initiated with the intent to increase productivity, improve customer experience, and leverage resources across the enterprise.  A major component of this initiative was the consolidation of their disparate legacy systems into a single instance of Oracle E-Business Suite R12.  This case study represents one phase of the implementation, though the requirements and challenges pertained to every phase of the implementation.  

Requirements

The overall Data Migration requirements for this phase of the implementation were as follows:

  • The data from 10 ERP systems needed to be extracted, consolidated, de-duplicated, cleansed, and transformed before it could be loaded into a single instance of  Oracle EBS
  • The Data Migration process needed to be repeatable and execute within a specific time frame
  • Portions of the migration needed to be reconciled to the source data after the data was loaded into Oracle EBS

Challenges

There were many obstacles to making the Data Migration successful. Several of the largest challenges were:

  • The level of data duplication across the disparate legacy systems was high
  • The database technology running  many of  the legacy systems was old, including a 30 year old mainframe and an Oracle 8i database that was nearly 20 years old
  • Several of the legacy systems had poor data quality, reflecting missing, inconsistent, and invalid data
  • The data structures of the legacy systems were drastically different both from each other and from the target Oracle EBS data structure
  • Specification changes were an extremely frequent occurrence and new specifications needed to be accounted for within the Data Migration programs in a short time frame
  • Due to the large data volumes and complexity, the schedule could not wait for the Oracle EBS load (API) programs to identify issues that would cause a record to fail – this invalid data needed to be identified and addressed earlier in the process

Using Applaud® for the Data Migration

To help overcome these challenges, the Client seriously considered several alternatives, including internal resources and Informatica.  After a “bake-off” with a global consulting firm using the Informatica software, the Client chose Premier International’s Applaud® Data Migration Services as their Data Migration solution.

There are three key components of Premier’s Applaud solution that helped the Client through the Data Migration.  

  • The first component is Premier’s Data Migration consultants.  Premier’s services group average more than 8 years of experience working with Applaud exclusively on Data Migration.  
  • The second component is Premier’s Data Migration software, Applaud.  Applaud was built from the ground up to address the challenges that occur on Data Migration projects and allows the team to accomplish all data needs using one integrated product.  
  • The third component is Premier’s RapidTrak methodology, which helps ensure that the project stays on track.  Premier’s EPACTL approach to Data Migration projects is different from traditional ETL approaches, and this methodology decreases overall implementation time and reduces the risk of the Data Migration.

The Results and Future Plans

The end result of using Applaud Data Migration services was a successful implementation.  The Applaud team was able to exceed expectations in getting the data ready for go-live and facilitating a smooth and uneventful go-live.  Without the Applaud team, it would have been unlikely that the Client would have been able to accomplish everything that was needed in the required timeframe.  Bringing Applaud into the project drastically reduced the risk of failure.  

Since the completion of the initial phase of the implementation, the Client has continued to leverage the Applaud team for all subsequent phases of their overall implementation as they continue to successfully and seamlessly deploy across the globe.
